Matthew Mott Affirms Andrew Flintoff’s Return to England’s White-Ball Coaching Staff

Andrew Flintoff has been actively involved with England during their 2023 Cricket World Cup warm-up matches against New Zealand and Ireland. As per white-ball coach Matthew Mott, Flintoff is set to have a continued presence within the coaching team in the foreseeable future. The 45-year-old recently marked his debut public appearance in his coaching role, following a significant accident he endured while filming for Top Gear in 2022.

England coach Matthew Mott has claimed Andrew Flintoff will play a role in England’s short-format coaching team in the future.
The 2005 Ashes hero linked up with England’s One Day International side earlier this month, taking up an unpaid mentoring and coaching role with the team, helping Jos Buttler’s side prepare for the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
“He’s definitely going to join us again in future, we’ve loved having him around,” white ball coach Mott said, after England’s ODI match against Ireland on Tuesday was called off due to rain.

The 45-year-old had only been scheduled to work with England’s backroom staff for their summer ODI warm up series against New Zealand and Ireland.
Flintoff, who took 226 wickets and scored 3,845 runs during his test career, is regarded as one an icon of English cricket, playing a starring role in the infamous 2005 Ashes triumph. He went on to captain the side at the 2006 Ashes series before announcing his retirement in 2009.
But it appears England may call on him again to re-join the side at some stage in the future.

“He [Flintoff] is revered, he’s got an aura about him, he’s very special,” Mott added.
“What he’s gone through recently [being involved in a serious crash last December], the humility he’s displayed and the life experiences he can share have been immense.
“Even the seasoned Test veterans, they grew up idolising him and to see him in the flesh offering so much has been very special.
“He’s keen to do the under-19s, pathway [and is] an incredible asset to have around. He’s loved it – he’s certainly got plenty of banter in the last week or so and long may that continue.”
Buttler’s side will begin their Cricket World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 5, but travel to India this week before their final two warm up games against India and Bangladesh.
England’s cricketers have also admitted their pleasure of having Flintoff in the group, with Chris Woakes claiming earlier this month that it was “surreal” to have such an icon of English to bounce ideas off.
“Having Freddie around the group is amazing and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s the first time I’ve spent a large amount of time with him,” he said following England’s second victory against New Zealand.

“I’ve had the chance to meet him a few times, but having him as part of the team – he was a childhood hero of mine. Being able to have conversations with him and share some light-hearted moments in the dressing room is quite surreal. It’s truly fantastic!”
